Meet the Briallen

PERSONALITY: Most Briallen are peaceful, contemplative people who simply wish to live in peace with their neighbors. Their peculiar biology, however, is source of misunderstanding and prejudice amongst other species, even though Yomi Founders' species (Humans, Nixanti and Fuminoids) always welcomed the Briallen into their society.
As a result of the major distrust towards them, many Briallen turned into ruthless, passionate people willing to do anything to protect their homeworld from threats to its independence and security.
Recently, the Briallen Hierarchy started to pursue Alliance Membership trough diplomatic channels, even though many independendists seek to stop this important step, stating it would thwart Briallen's quest for independence and freedom.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Briallen possess the same average height, weight, and variations in skin tone and hair color as Humans. The only outward physical difference is the presence of both genders' genitalia. They prefer loose-fitting clothes in a variety of earth tones and other subdued colors when dealing with outsiders to hide their different biology, while when between friends or people of the same species they usually wear nothing at all.
Many of them also possess distinctive tattoos to display their devotion to their Gods (the Briars). In times past, the design of the tattoo also revealed a Briallen's social status, but many modern Briallen have discarded that tradition.

HOMEWORLD: Furatu, the third of eleven planets orbiting Briar'va'el, is a pleasant world similar in most respects to Earth.

CULTURE: Briallen culture began approximately 60,000 years ago. Through four multiple-millennia republics, periods of civil wars and chaos, and a brutal war against their first-contact species, the Galixians, it has remained largely unified and coherent. The Briallen religion, which has become less and less important in their culture, centers on the worship of Briars, genderless gods who, according to legends, never interacted with the Briallen population over the centuries.

Regardless of religion, every Briallen tries to live peacefully and aims to be useful to other people in their society and in the Alliance. Their government is an an elaborate hierarchy where every citizen has the right to participate if they wish so.
Briallen people are also renown for their culinary skills. From cooking both home and exotic foods, the Briallen produce tastes envied and admired by many other civilizations. Food industry plays a large role in Briallen's economy.

NEUTRAL PRONOUN: As Briallen are a hermaphrodit species, it is polite not to refer to them as "Him" or "Her", as the neutral pronoun "Hem" is used widely amongst them. At the same time "his" and "her" are translated into "shem" (or "sher" by some dialectal forms), and "He"/"She" is translated into "Shes".
As aliens often strive to use the proper word, Briallen learned not to be offended by other species' mistakes, as long as the mistake is genuine and not meant to be disrespecftul.

Briallen's sexual preferences have always been somewhat a myth amongst non-Briallen. People always think that a Briallen is bisexual and has no sexual preference. While the majority of the population shows no issues in mating with other Briallen, alien multi-gendered species attract Briallen differently. About 40% of Briallen people claim to be attracted by females of alien species, another 40% by males and a 10% claims to find aliens "disgusting".

It is considered rude to ask a Briallen about their sexual preference directly, unless they're on a close relationship with you.
